What is the history of Shabby Chic?
Shabby Chic is a style of interior design that originated in large European country houses, particularly in Britain and France. It became quite famous in the 1980s and '90s, after designer Rachel Ashwell opened a store with the same name. The term "shabby chic" was coined by Ashwell to define her concept of turning vintage thrift finds into casual and pretty, yet elegant home decor. The style is characterized by furniture and furnishings that either show signs of age and wear or are distressed to achieve the same result. The color scheme is typically soft and neutral, often featuring sky blue, rose pink, and beige. Hints from French-style interior design often show in shabby chic homes, such as Rococo-style lighting fixtures, furniture, or wall paneling. The shabby chic aesthetic also expands to the garden, with the same design principles of using timeworn garden furniture and soft-hued accessories. Rose gardens are popular with the shabby chic style of decor. Varieties of shabby chic style include Cottage chic, Beach cottage chic, French country, and Gustavian (Swedish). The style is considered to be relaxed, romantic, and looks comfortable, inviting, and feminine. The masculine counterpart would be "rustic," with deeper or richer colors and rustic furniture using unfinished wood, denim, burlap, sailcloth, and homespun cloth.
